Circa 1940s silk 'Rising Sun' flag with thin cord hangers tied to two corners. The word 'Japan' translates to 'land of the rising sun' and is the symbolic foundation for the design. The Imperial Japanese Army first adopted the Rising Sun Flag in 1870 and continued to use it till their surrender in August 1945 at the end of World War II. The Imperial Japanese Naval version of this design is features the 'sun' slightly off-set. These 'personal flags' were often carried by Japanese soldiers and brought to the US as victory items by returning military personal.
