Beautiful specimen of a rare I.P. Sauer A. Suhl flintlock pistol, believed to be .36 caliber with a 9.75" barrel. The marking of I.P. Sauer A. Suhl is stamped on the top of the barrel, with I.P. Sauer stamped on the lockplate. The brass plate on the butt, the side, and the brass trigger guard are all engraved. The walnut stock has various carvings on the forend and a floral carving on the top of the grip. All metal parts in the firing mechanism are in very good condition. Comes with a ramrod and a horn tip and fits inside two brass ramrod pipes. There is no evidence of rust or pitting on the metal. The wood has great patina and shows only minor scratches and nicks as expected with age. The Sauer family began making high-quality firearms in Suhl Germany in 1751 and became one of Germany's oldest and most prestigious gunmakers. "I.P. Sauer" is simply an alternate 19th-century spelling of Germanic transcriptions of "J.P. Sauer". The letter "I" was commonly used as the older German equivalent of the modern letter "J" in the 1800's. There is a small crack in the wood where the barrel meets the grip. (Available at Ops Supply for Inspection, despite being exempt from background check).
