According to paper work provided, this frame was made by Ed William Lewis in 1896 while a student at Kentucky State College and contains scraps of wood from the Civil War ships, the USS Monitor and USS Merrimack. The frame has a think wood border and made of what appears to be oak and walnut with 70 individual inlays of different woods and obviously well done hand crafted. Mr. Lewis (1877-1968) graduated from Kentucky State College in 1898. The battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack (referred to as the Battle of Hampton Roads) occurred March 8-9, 1862 at the mouth of the James River. (Wardlow Auctions does not attest to the validity of the wood but is simply reporting the information provided to us). Size: Overall is 25.75"w x 31.75"h; mat size (where picture goes) is 15"w x 21"h.
